2 W HAT IS IT ? CHAMPs is a standard set of procedures that can be adapted to each classroom situation. CHAMPs is an acronym. C = Conversation H = Help A = Activity M = Movement P = Participation

3 C or Conversation This letter informs the student if conversation is permitted or not, and if so at what level H or Help This letter guides the student when they need help. Help includes asking for assistance, needing supplies, and other situations in which the student can not help themselves. A or Activity The letter A states what the student should be doing during this period of instruction. M or Movement The movement section outlines if and when students are permitted to move around the classroom. P or Participation This letter tells exactly what is expected of students during this period of instruction.

4 Inside Voices until the bell rings. Once seated you may speak quietly to your neighbors Ask a classmate for help before you as the teacher Prepare for the day and complete your bell-work Get items for first period and be seated Students are arriving on time, getting situated with needed materials, and working towards completing bell-work Arrival governs when the students arrive in the morning and to each of their classes Arrival

5 Transitions are the times when students are moving from one area on campus to another. Transitions None Wait until you get to your destination and are properly following the arrival procedures before you ask your teacher Relocate promptly In a quiet and efficient line or lines Students quietly and quickly move from one location to another on campus

6 When the teacher is at the front of the class giving instruction. Students are typically alone at their desks, often times taking notes. Direct Instruction None Raise your hand and wait to be called upon Active listening and responding when prompted None Students are sitting in their seats, listening to the teacher, watching the teacher and responding when prompted

7 Students are at their desks working on a teacher assigned task without the help of others. Independent Practice None unless directed by the teacher Raise your hand and wait to be called upon Practice what you learned None Students are working on their assigned tasks in their seats

8 Any activity in which students are working in a group. This could be as few as a pair or as many as half students. Small Groups Within your group Raise your hand and wait to be called upon Everyone in the group works together to complete the assigned task To get group supplies and then to return to your area Students are equally involved in completing the assigned tasks within their groups

9 The period of instruction that includes independent production of work that is to be graded or scored. Formal Assessment None Raise your hand and wait to be called upon Independently complete your assigned task None Students are working on the assessment using proper test taking skills
