2 INTASC STANDARD STANDARD #9: PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND ETHICAL PRACTICE THE TEACHER ENGAGES IN ONGOING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND USES EVIDENCE TO CONTINUALLY EVALUATE HIS/HER PRACTICE, PARTICULARLY IN THE EFFECTS OF HIS/HER CHOICES AND ACTIONS ON OTHERS(LEARNERS, FAMILIES, OTHER PROFESSIONALS, AND THE COMMUNITY), AND ADAPTS PRACTICE TO MEET THE NEEDS OF EACH LEARNER. BY BEING WELL-AWARE OF THE RUMORS AND REALITIES OF STUDENT-TEACHER ABUSE, AN EDUCATOR WILL BE ABLE TO ACT APPROPRIATELY ON ANY GIVEN SITUATION. AN EDUCATOR CAN ALSO FACILITATE A HEALTHY AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR HIS OR HER STUDENTS AS WELL AS RAISE AWARENESS AND IMPLEMENT A PREVENTION PLAN IN THE CLASSROOM COMMUNITY.

3 WHAT IS STUDENT ABUSE? GOOD QUESTION… ABUSE OF A STUDENT BY A TEACHER OCCURS WHEN A TEACHER VIOLATES A STUDENT’S RIGHTS OR ENDANGERS THEIR SAFETY AND WELL-BEING.

4 CONT.. CHILD ABUSE IS DEFINED BY THE US DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AS ANY RECENT ACT OR FAILURE TO ACT ON THAT RESULTS IN A CHILD’S SERIOUS PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL HARM, SEXUAL ABUSE, EXPLOITATION OR DEATH.

5 DIFFERENT WAYS SHAPES AND FORMS PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, OR SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF THE CHILD EXCESSIVE OR UNAUTHORIZED USE OF “CORPOREAL PUNISHMENT” (PHYSICAL FORCE) DISCRIMINATION BASED ON PROTECTED CATEGORIES, SUCH AS RACE, GENDER, OR DISABILITY RESTRICTIONS ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF THE STUDENT, SUCH AS THOSE INVOLVING FREE SPEECH AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION FAILURE TO ADDRESS ANY SPECIAL NEEDS OF THE STUDENT, SUCH AS HANDICAP ACCESS UNFAIR ACADEMIC TREATMENT, INCLUDING BIAS OR PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT IN GRADING DENIAL OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

6 STATISTICALLY SPEAKING OVER 90% OF SEXUAL OFFENDERS ARE SOMEONE THE CHILD KNOWS AND TRUSTS – A PARENT OR OTHER RELATIVE, TEACHER, CAMP COUNSELOR, BABYSITTER, OR FAMILY FRIEND

9 COMMON MYTHS MYTH #1 IT’S ONLY ABUSE IF IT’S VIOLENT. PHYSICAL ABUSE IS JUST ONE TYPE OF CHILD ABUSE, NEGLECT AND EMOTIONAL ABUSE CAN BE JUST AS DAMAGING AND SINCE THEY ARE MORE SUBTLE, OTHER ARE LESS LIKELY TO INTERVENE ONLY BAD PEOPLE ABUSE THEIR CHILDREN MYTH #2 While its easy to say that only bad people abuse their children, it is absolutely not true because everyone is prone to stress and anger FACT:
