1 Race and Diversity of Finding Nemo
By Brendan Wood, Pei-Fei Chiu, Victoria Kiarsis, and Jack Durkee

2 Definition and Key Points of Race and Diversity
Definition- To see how race and diversity is portrayed. Key points- Watch for the accent, body features, attitude, and looks.

3 Example One from Finding Nemo
In “Finding Nemo” many characters have accents that show their diversity Most characters had American accents Examples: Bruce and the Nigel had Australian accents and said Australian words like “Sheila” Shrimp in tank was French, the turtles had “surfer dude” accents, and sword fish were British

4 Example Three The tank was probably the place where there was the most diversity among characters. Bloat seemed African-American, Jacque, the shrimp, was most likely French, and the rest of the characters in the tank were American. Near the end of the movie, there were all those fish that were in a stressed out position. These fish were sort of like New Yorkers. They were in a “rush hour,” uptight, but they worked well together and they listened well.

5 Example Four In “ Finding Nemo “ the dentist office had all white people. The dentist, all the patients and his niece were white This is extremely racist, considering that there are many African Americans and Chinese that go to dentists office.

6 Closing Key Points Using this critical lens, you should know that movies usually have a diverse cast of characters and movies use race to define good and bad characters in the movie When watching a movie, always watch for accents, looks, attitudes, and body features shown in characters of certain roles
