ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: The students will be able to evaluate the importance of different rights between people, the state and nation through the class election. The students will be able to explain how individuals influence public policy when writing a bill. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: The students will be able to understand how elections work within the U.S. Process/Skills: The students will be able to organize and count votes for each position. Values/Dispositions: The students will be able to understand what civics means to them through a small class election.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: It is important for students to learn about voting and running for office so they can have a better understanding on how it works and what their role is in it. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 14.C.2- Describe and evaluate why rights and responsibilities are important to the individual, family, community, work place, state and nation (e.g., voting, protection under the law. 14.D.2- Explain ways that individuals and groups influence and shape public policy. National – NCSS Themes Assist learners in developing an understanding for civic life, politics, and government, so that the learners can explore the origins of governmental authority, recognize the need for government; identify the crucial functions of government, including laws and rules; evaluate rules and laws; differentiate between limited and unlimited government; and appreciate the importance of limitations on government power.

Logical/Mathematical The learning activity for this would be counting all the votes in the class election and graphing each position separately with the people running for that position on a bar graph to display the data. Resources needed would be information on how real votes are counted in election polls. Verbal/Linguistic This learning activity would have the children wanting to run for a position in the class to give a short 2 minute speech on why they want to do that job, how they are the best for it and why they should be picked. Musical/Rhythmic This learning activity would have the students running for a position for class office to come up with a short song or jingle about the position they are running for. Resources needed for this activity would be job descriptions and responsibilities for each position. Body/Kinesthetic For this activity I would have the students getting up out of their seats to cast their votes for class elections in a mock voting booth. Resources that could be used for this lesson would be history of voting. Interpersonal This activity would have the students watching different speeches and debates from a presidential election and the writing about how well the candidate gets along with others or where they might need improvement. Naturalistic The activity that would be done for this lesson would be to have the students come up with some new laws about nature and how to protect it. Then have the whole class vote on it. Resources for this activity would be already made laws for nature in the area.
