5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 1 Wall Summit ‘04 Data Sets Brian Davis U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS) Data Center (EDC) Wall Summit ’04 Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics Scripps Institution of Oceanography UCSD La Jolla CA May 10, 2004

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 2 Wall Summit ‘04 Progress since Wall Summit ‘03 Dramatic progress has been made! … but only because of the vital contributions from hard-working USGS staff dedicated to ………

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 3 Wall Summit ‘04 Rob’s suggested questions to answer: What Data Sets are available? What are up and coming? What have we been using them for? What are some of the problems in collating different datasets? How to solve visualizing large datasets? How to get the data in the first place? Datasets

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 4 Wall Summit ‘04 What Data Sets are available? Raw materials vs. Canned Demo Materials Raw Materials – Not just for Walls … ASTER – 15m – free - downloadable Paul Morin MODIS - 250m – free - downloadable http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/datapool/datapool.asp 133UA – 1’ – free – downloadable (or $500/250GB) Seamless.usgs.gov – additional 30m layers Elevation – 10m/30m – free – downloadable When USGS constructs something 3-D of interest, I’ll post it

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 5 Wall Summit ‘04 Soon to be Available? Landsat 7 SLC-off or composites – GloVis.usgs.gov - ~200-300 $ per scene LDCM – Goal is Launch within 5 yrs. 133UA – 1’ – free – seamless Lidar Elevation data - ~1m – free - seamless DOQs – 1m – free – CONUS seamless 3” aerial photography of GA location IKONOS, QuickBird – 1-4m - Potential for Declassification ; CRSP Synthetic Aperture RADAR (SAR) – local library - Mostly volcanoes MRLC – 30m - $45 – local library – US only Elevation – 10m/30m – free – downloadable – seamless (NED) – continuously updated Forest Fire growth model animations Hurricane Flood inundation model animations Higher-level geo-referenced data layers

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 6 Wall Summit ‘04 What have we been using them for? Identifying Tree Voxels, bare earth vs. vegetation canopies Forest Fire Assessment Homeland Security / Urban Planning Demonstrations for funding solicitations Translation: “The Data Pimp Must Eat” Portable Wall to be “stored” in Science Department’s Lab – stay tuned

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 7 Wall Summit ‘04 What are some of the problems in collating different datasets? I say Elevation, you say topography Stereo Pair Generation Map Projection/Reprojection General image processing of remote sensing data Determining availability, and cost Providing direct access Interaction with data inside the Wall Interactive retrieval of layers Discussing high-rez imagery of our golf course instead of responding to the governor of SD

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 8 Wall Summit ‘04 How to solve visualizing large datasets? Money Hardware CPUs Graphics Cards Networking Sure, more faster memory But really the interactive loading of memory from remote data sources - Software Look-ahead pre-fetching

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 9 Wall Summit ‘04 How to get the data in the first place? Money Build data costs into your grants If I get you something, share it with everyone Additions to seamless, and seamless-like clones Continued EDC improvement to distribution systems LDCM CRSP Better education by me of me

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 10 Wall Summit ‘04 Where are we getting our data now? Locations vs. disciplines? Is Data Warehousing desirable for our developer community? What is meant by “Data Warehousing”? Is interactive access by visualization applications desired? Required? Metadata should include source and processing history? Sharing our resources: The need for training/mentoring new developers? Hardware? Software? Data? Human? What are the logical steps towards GIS? Are any of those steps occurring? Wall Summit Attendee expectations: Where can I get every data set I saw this week? (and more, with desc.) How do I get my data to look like that? How do I get my OTHER data into multiple Viz App formats? Mike Kelly’s Suggested Questions from Wall Summit ‘03

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 11 Wall Summit ‘04 Where Are We Getting Data Now? (Summit ’03) Provider Perspective USGS Satellite Images + Elevation LIDAR Aerial Scripps ESA, USGS, Seismology UMN …… UMI …. ASU …….. EVL ……. Everyone Else? Consumer Perspective GeoWall.org Anywhere else? (at least for purpose of sharing/distributing)

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 12 Wall Summit ‘04 Consumer Perspective (’03) Three Learning Curves 1.Hardware 2.Software 3.Data i.Data Translation ii.Data Translation Software iii.GIS (or other) S/W Vendor Incorporation of Stereo Output iv.Peter V.’s “Recipes”: url; Readme; Metadata

5/10/ 2004 4:29:43 PM 13 Wall Summit ‘04 Suggested Web Site Updates? (03)
