Earth Science 2013 Grade 8 Pulford

Models  Models are used to demonstrate something that is too big or too small to show in the classroom  They can be 2D (paper) or 3D  Some example include:  Atomic Model  DNA Model  Solar System Model  Ocean floor Model

Models 2D examples

Models 3D examples

Models have limits  Typically only show one or two characteristics at a time  Cannot show everything all at once  Loose a lot of the details when you make a model

Solar System-Size Comparison

Solar System Orbits

Answer these simple questions  On what characteristic did the first model focus?  On what characteristic did the second model focus?  Name two things that each of the models lacked.

Simulations  These are used when something is too dangerous to create in real life  Examples:  Category 5 Hurricane hitting New Jersey  10.0 magnitude Earthquake in Los Angeles  EF5 Tornado hitting St. Louis Missouri  Meteor hitting the Earth

Tornado Simulations

Hurricane Simulation

Earthquake Simulation
