Literature Searching Your essays should demonstrate you have read and considered the opinions and views of other authors This should go beyond reading the college texts and set books

Why? IT better enables you to hold a balanced and well informed DISCUSSION within your essay It enables you to demonstrate analysis and evaluation It allows you to consider and appreciate other peoples views

Acknowledging the Ideas of Others You must always acknowledge in your work where you have used someone else's ideas This is done using REFERENCING If this is not done it is called ‘PLAGERISM’

Quality of Literature Literature used to inform your work should be of good academic quality: Textbooks Original Research papers Reports – government/scientific/large associations Theses Magazine/newspaper articles Internet sources TV/Radio broadcasts Lecture/conference notes

PRIMARY RESEARCH SOURCES ARE CONSIDERED PREFERABLE TO SECONDARY RESEARCH SOURCES These are: Research papers Official Reports

Where to find Good Quality Literature Online At the library – particularly The British Library Referenced books/articles/theses/reports etc Attending lectures/conferences
