REVISING AND EDITING – POETRY ESSAY

Introduction: First sentence Includes title of poem, poet and publication year Second and third sentences synopsis (short summary) of poem Fourth sentence Explanation of how the ides in the poem connect to ideas of the time period in which the poem was written Fifth sentence Thesis statement: This should be similar to a thematic statement and should explain the ideas expressed in the poem. REVISION

Body paragraphs Topic sentence Should include the device and the abstract concept Second sentence Should explain the device Third sentence Should include a woven quote and citation Fourth sentence Should explain the quote including how the device is present in the quote All other sentences Should explain HOW the device communicates the abstract concept. WHY did the poet choose to use that device? What impact does that particular device have on the reader?

REVISION Be sure you have distinguished between the speaker and the poet

REVISE Conclusion Should explain how the ideas in the poem connect to modern society Should offer specific examples Should connect back to the poem at the end

EDITING “Speakers” should be “speaker’s” Title of poem should be IN QUOTATION MARKS Citation At the end of the sentence in which the quote occurs Before the period EXAMPLE: Prufrock communicates that he “measures out his life in coffee spoons” (Eliot 9). Fix all fragments, run-on sentences and comma splices.

EDITING – Check for MLA heading Your name Ms. Esparza English III – 1 st period Today’s Date MLA Heading should be in the top left corner of you paper and ONLY on the first page of your essay. Double space your heading.

EDITING – Check your format Whole essay should be double spaced Indent paragraphs (tab) 12 point font Times New Roman or Calibri font
