Heat Transfer Chapter 4
2
Three Types of Heat Transfer Conduction Convection Radiation Heat always travels from areas that are warmer to areas that are cooler Warm to Cool or Hot to Cold
3
Conduction Conduction is the process that moves heat energy from one object to another when they are touching Occurs only in solids Metals are good conductors of heat
4
Convection Convection is the process that transfers heat energy in through liquids and gases Helps to explain weather changes and volcanoes/plate tectonics
5
Radiation Radiation is heat energy that travels as electromagnetic waves through air. Sun is the biggest source of radiation energy
6
Conduction, Convection, & Radiation
7
Heat Transfer in a Nutshell Conduction- heat transfer through solids Convection- heat transfer through liquids and gases Radiation - heat transfer through gases Insulators- used to slow the transfer of heat energy from warmer objects to cooler objects. Good insulators are wood, fiberglass, plastic, paper, foam
