Aims and Teaching Methods The aim of this course is to teach students key points of English grammar and improve their conversational skills at an intermediate level in a student-centered classroom. To achieve this, students will be engaged in various types of activities working individually, in pairs and in small groups, such as filling out questionnaires, doing quizzes and role-playing games.

Week 1, Unit 1 Academic Life Around the World Connecting to the Topic (Think of some of your close friends. How did you meet them? What types of information are important on the first day of a new class?) Part 1: Meeting New Friends a. Speaking: Introducing yourself and others, discussing body language b. Listening: Meeting new classmates

Week 2, Unit 1 Academic Life Around the World c. Vocabulary Building: Expressions used in introductions, for making friends, terms related to arrival and orientation at college or university d. Speaking/Listening: Leaving/giving phone messages Part 2: Presentation - School Orientation speech Part 3: Test Preparation - Strategies for Better Listening and Speaking

Week 3, Unit 2 Experiencing Nature Connecting to the Topic (What kinds of outdoor activities do you enjoy? What is your favorite kind of weather? Why?) Part 1: Vacation Plans a. Speaking: Discussing vacation plans, talking about abilities, the weather and seasons, expressing likes and dislikes b. Listening: Listening for general ideas, details, stressed words, reductions (can vs. can’t)

Week 4, Unit 2 Experiencing Nature Part 2: Listening – Camping a. Prelistening Questions: Have you ever gone camping? Where? When? With whom? b. Vocabulary Preview c. Taking Notes d. Summarizing Ideas Part 3: Test Preparation – Strategies for Better Listening and Speaking

Week 5, Unit 3 Living to Eat, or Eating to Live? Connecting to the Topic (What are some of your favorite things to eat when you visit your family?) Part 1: Shopping for food a. Interviewing people about food shopping b. Comparing eating habits at home and when traveling c. Ordering food d. Refusing food politely

Week 6, Unit 3 Living to Eat, or Eating to Live? Part 2: Listening – Healthy Eating a. Vocabulary Preview b. Listening for main ideas, taking notes on specific information Part 3: Test Preparation – Strategies for Better Listening and Speaking

Week 7, Unit 4 In the Community Connecting to the Topic (Grocery shopping and doing laundry are examples of errands and chores. What kinds of errands and chores do you usually do each week? What do you like and dislike most about your community?) Part 1: In the City a. Talking about running errands b. Describing locations in a city, your neighborhood c. Comparing cities and towns
