PRESENTED BY TARUN CHUGH ROLL NO:1501502807 DATE OF PRESENTATION :-29/09/2010 ARTIFICIAL PASSENGER

INTRODUCTION According to national survey in UK and USA it is observed that the driver fatigue annually causes  1000 crashes.  1500 deaths.  7100 injuries. Majority of road accidents observed were caused by eye-closure of one-half second to as long as 2 to 3 seconds. It is said that the normal human eye blinks lasts 0.2 to 0.3 second.

EXISTING SYSTEM.. Use of stimulation drinks like tea or coffee. Take some tablets to prevent sleeping.

In order to avoid the disadvantages of the existing system IBM developed a software to determine whether the driver can respond alertly enough. The device is named as “ARTIFICIAL PASSENGER”

ARTIFICIAL PASSENGER A sleep prevention dialogue based car system. Design to make long solo journey more enjoyable and safer. Prevent driver’s drowsiness via the speech interactivity.

What does it do? Engage in conversation with driver related to his interest. Also amuse the driver with the interactive games or jokes. More stimulating content for driver who appears to be fatigued.

Components used… Automatic speech recognition.(ASR) Natural language processor.(NLP) Driver analyzer. Conversational planner Alarm. External service provider.

AUTOMATIC SPEECH RECOGNITION (ASR) To convert the acoustic signal captured by microphone to the set of words. Output of the ASR act as an input to further Natural language processor.

FEATURES OF ASR Should be working in real time circumstances. Large vocabulary. Speaker independent.

NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSOR (NLP) Form of human to computer interaction. Required as computer cannot understand human language. Produce variant of responses according to driver response.

DRIVER ANALYZER Measure the time response using the in build clock. Time response give us conclusion about the driver’s alertness. These responses will pass on to the conversation planner.

CONVERSATIONAL PLANER It is heart of the system. Hold the profile of the driver that include his hobbies and profession. Instructs the language generator to produce the response.

ITS FUNCTION If the driver is in perfect condition CP instructs the language generator to continue the conversation. otherwise, it will change the conversation or sound an alarm, open up the window.

ALARM If conversational planner receive that driver is about to fall asleep an alarm system is activated. MICROPHONE For picking up words and separate them by some internally used software for conversation.

CAMERA A camera is built on the dashboard or middle of steering so as to track your lip movement to improve the accuracy of the speech recognition.

EXTERNAL SERVICE PROVIDER For facilitating the communication in between the dialog system and remotely located external service provider. External service provider is coupled through the adapter to the car media, driver analyzer module and conversational planner.

The working….. NLP ASR Language constraint Profile Driver analyzer Conversation planner Lang. generator Speech generator alarm clock Car media Ext. service provider micropho ne

WORKING OF ARTIFICIAL PASSENGER Camera rigged on to the steering wheel will monitor the eye closure frequency. If frequency exceed the threshold frequency, artificial passenger will be activated. The system has a conversation planner that holds a profile of you, including details of your interests and profession.

WORKING… A microphone picks up your answer and breaks it down into separate words with speech-recognition software. A camera built into the dashboard also tracks your lip movements to improve the accuracy of speech recognition.

WORKING.. A voice analyzer then looks for signs of tiredness by checking to see if the answer matches your profile. Slow responses and lack of attention are signs of fatigue. If you reply quickly and clearly, the system judges you to be alert and tells the conversation planner to continue the line of questioning.

WORKING. If your response is slow or doesn’t make sense, the voice analyzer assumes you are dropping off and acts to get your attention. If driver displays signs of fatigue, the artificial passenger might be programmed to open all the windows, sound a buzzer, increase background music volume, or even spray the driver with ice water.

APPLICATION Interface with Neighboring Cars -Determines if a driver presents a high safety risk for ex. falling asleep, tired, inexperienced or under the influence of alcohol and signals the cars nearby to be careful of the driver. Medical Application -The system can monitor a driver and detect if they are sick, for ex. having a stroke or heart attack. It is also used for the entertainment. Also used in cabins in airplanes, trains, boats etc

FUTURE ENHANCEMENTS Will provide us with shortest time routing based on road conditions changing because of weather and traffic, information about the cars on the route, destination requirement.

CONCLUSION Method for monitoring driver alertness Sufficient time to avert an accident.
