Purpose To Promote, preserve, & protect the public health, safety and welfare by regulating nursing education and practice ensuring that any individual practicing or offering to practice nursing or using the title “registered nurse” or “advanced practice registered nurse” shall be licensed before engaging in such practice.

Influenced by: - Is influenced by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Model Practice Act & the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and Model Nursing Administrative Rules

State Nurse Practice Act Protects the public by broadly defining the legal scope of nursing practice Most important law concerning YOUR nursing practice Legal obligation to practice within the state’s nurse practice act

Functions of the NPA Defines the scope of practice Establish requirements for licensure and entry into practice Create and empower a board to govern licensure and practice Identify grounds for disciplinary action Defines client outcomes for which nurses are responsible

Composition of the Board 11 members 9 nurses (8RNs, 1 CRNA) 2 physicians Appointed by the governor Headed by executive director (RN) Implements the NPA

Compensation $75 / Day Reimbursement for actual expenses and mileage

Qualifications for Licensure of a RN Good Moral Character Completed requirements of Nursing Education Program Passes an examination Completed certain course work Not in violation of rules and regulations Committed no acts or omissions which are grounds for disciplinary action Is proficient in the English Language

Endorsement Certification of an applicant who is duly licensed as a RN or APRN in another state, territory, or country for licensure to practice as a registered nurse or advance practice registered nurse in this state.

Nurse Licensure Compact allows a RN to have one license from the primary state of residency yet practice in other compact member states without an additional license (i.e. travel nurses, telehealth practices)
