Do Now—5.6.15 What is personal protective equipment (PPE)? What do you think it means for something to be sterile? Clean?

Unit 5: Infectious Diseases 5.1.6:Lines of Defense
3
Objective SWBAT reflect on their performance on the group lymphatic system assessment. SWBAT diagram the steps necessary to isolate bacteria.
4
Nonspecific vs. Specific WS
Nonspecific external defense mechanisms—these keep pathogens from entering the body without pathogen recognition. Both: Nonspecific external defense (first defense)—keeps pathogens out Skin: block pathogen entry, suppresses microbe growth. Mucus: traps pathogens
5
Nonspecific vs. Specific WS
Nonspecific internal defense mechanisms (phagocytic cells, inflammation)—these kill pathogens after they have been able to enter the body. WBCs indicate that there is a serious infection because WBCs are phagocytic cells, which are part of nonspecific and specific immunity. WBCs are involved in inflammation and cell-mediated immunity. WBCs engulf pathogens.
6
Nonspecific vs. Specific WS
Don’t have notes for #6 and #7, but these are the answers
7
Nonspecific vs. Specific WS
Bacteria, virus, allergens (dust, pollen, etc —you’ll see in the Immunity packet) Cell-mediated response involves the T cells (helper and cytotoxic) and macrophages. Antibody-mediated response (humoral response) involves the B cells (plasma and memory) and antibodies and can involve helper T cells.
8
Nonspecific vs. Specific WS
The clump (antigen and antibody interaction) attracts phagocytes (WBCs) and the WBCs engulf the clump and destroy it.

5.1.3: Isolating Bacteria
13
5.1.3: Isolating Bacteria Aseptic technique is a method of preventing the transmission of infectious agents to/from specimens; working in sterile (no infectious agents) conditions.
14
5.1.3: Isolating Bacteria New sterile plastic inoculating loops must be used to transfer bacterial cultures. Metal inoculating loops can be sterilized (using fire) in between cultures.

5.1.3: Isolating Bacteria New sterile plastic inoculating loops must be used to transfer bacterial cultures. Metal inoculating loops can be sterilized (using fire) in between cultures. Caps of test tubes or tops of Petri dishes must be held during the entire procedure and never placed on the table or contamination will result.

Proper personal protective equipment needs to be worn at all times.
