What is it??? 1.You are presenting a topic. ▫Verbal version of a constructed response: Background, supports, explanations, and conclusions 2.This is an ARGUMENT about that topic. ▫Persuasive, well-supported, organized, formal

Topic Questions 1.Can it be considered “too controversial”? 2.Can you find research? 3.Can you support with academic research? 4.Can you identify a counterargument? 5.Can it be considered interesting or engaging for an audience?

Thesis 1.Think research paper thesis: ▫A claim that can be proven with evidence! 2.Sets direction for presentation. 3.Summation of main point, including counterargument.

Possible Format 1 [Something] [does something] because [reason(s)]. The classification of plastic water bottles as an easy, “on the go” container contributes to environmental pollution because the majority of the bottles contain chemicals that are harmful to people and the planet.

Possible Format 2 Although [opposing evidence] [reason(s)] show [something] [does something]. Although grammar studies may not be the sole factor to student success because it is perceived as antiquated, research shows that it benefits students’ ability to write proficiently.
