Engineering Design & Drawings
2
Engineering Design is Structured Problem Solving Various problem solving frameworks: – Commonality?
3
Define the problem Develop alternative designs & select the most promising Build a prototype Test & redesign as necessary Document & release the design
4
Drawings: The Universal Language Engineers make drawings to understand and communicate ideas Drawings are used throughout the entire engineering design process. – Freehand sketching is used for generating ideas and for communicating them – Computer-aided design (CAD) is used to for both design documentation and to evaluate design alternatives. Engineering design still retains its artistic roots – Design requires both analysis and synthesis
5
Drawing Conventions: Rules of the Language Line techniques and lettering Planar Projections – Axonometric – Multiview drawings – Auxiliary and sectional view Dimensioning and tolerancing Examples
6
Planar Projections
7
Free-Hand sketches---let’s have some fun Tools A freehand sketch begins with proportionally laid out construction lines – Drawn thin & lightly – Guide the drawing Object lines are thicker, dark and uniform
