Ancient Egyptian Writing: Hieroglyphics Like the Sumerians, ancient Egyptians looked for ways to communicate via a written language. Unlike the Sumerians they developed a system based on picture symbols instead of wedge shaped script. – Hieroglyphics means “ sacred carvings”

Ancient Egyptian Writing Egyptians also wrote on papyrus: a paper-like material made from thinly sliced papyrus reeds that grew along the Nile

The Rosetta Stone made it possible to read more than a thousand years of Egyptian history. The West used to marvel at the civilization simply because it was old, but this new wealth of information inspired an enthusiastic interest in Egypt.
