3 Vision for Arts Education In today’s globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina’s 21st century education.

4 North Carolina Department of Public Instruction 2011-2012 Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (RBT) Table The Cognitive Process Dimension 1. Remember – retrieve relevant knowledge from long-term memory 2. Understand – Construct meaning from instructional messages, including oral, written, and graphic communication 3. Apply – Carry out or use a procedure in a given situation 4. Analyze – Break material into its constituent parts and determine how the parts relate to one another and to an overall structure or purpose 5. Evaluate – Make judgments based on criteria and standards 6. Create – Put elements together to form a coherent or functional whole; reorganize elements into a new pattern or structure Source: Anderson, L.W., Krathwohl, D.R., eds. (2001). A taxonomy for learning, teaching, and assessing: a revision of Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives; abridged edition. NY: Addison Wesley Longman, Inc.

5 Cognitive Processes 2 important goals in education are to promote retention and promote transfer Retention is the ability to remember the material in much the same way it was presented. Transfer is the ability to use the material to solve new problems In RBT, the first cognitive process aids in retention, the other 5 in transfer. Remember the past and learn for the future
