1 TODAY’S AGENDA!  Context Clues (p. 798) complete 1-5 & double check with dictionary  Wasps’ Nest pre-reading: active reading strategy: asking questions (and making predictions) Journal #5: A Good Detective  Read “Wasps’ Nest” (p. 760) and work on seminar questions  HOMEWORK: finish reading the story and complete seminar worksheet Panera’s Chipotle Chicken Sandwich All-natural pepper-mustard chicken, smoked bacon, smoked cheddar, tomatoes & ancho- chipotle spread. (I get mine w/o tomatoes.)

2 ACTIVE READING STRATGIES ASKING QUESTIONS  Questioning allows you to be more involved in the plot of a story.  Questions can be about something that confuses you, something you think may have a great significance, or just questions about what will happen later in the story.  EXAMPLE: The detective was looking straight at him and again there was something so unusual in his glance that Harrison hardly knew how to proceed. What is so unusual about the glance? Why is he looking at him that way? What could it mean?

3 JOURNAL ENTRY #5  Imagine you are the chief of police and that you need a detective to investigate a murder. What kind of person would you want for the job?  Think of fictional detectives you have come across in books, stories, movies, and on TV. What traits/attributes do they have that make them good detectives?  After everyone has responded, we will create a class list of traits/attributes a good detective should have.

4 4 th Block Detective Traits  Unorthodox methods – sometimes things are as clear as mud  Cunning eye – able to spot little details  Questioning – need to know what to ask?  Tough – sometimes they are in danger – good to be able to defend yourself  Reasoning – listen and give benefit of the doubt  Strong personality – need to be able to handle what they deal with, always on top of their game  Fast reflexes – defend themselves

5 2 nd Block Detective Traits  Good note taker (observant) – need specific details  Intelligent – need to pick up on stuff  Courage – may confront dangerous people  Martial artist (marksmanship) – doesn’t hurt to be able to whoop somebody  Mustache – they all have them???  Strong mentally – deal with tough cases  Accuracy – need to get it right!  Good memory – little things may add up  Common sense  Athletic  Sly/sneaky – dig deeper
