2 Welcome and Introductions Meet your fellow students ‘People lotto’ Who do you know? Who would you like to get to know? Who works with the same age phase? Who lives / works near me?

3 Introduction to Learning and Teaching in Higher Education Responsibility lies with the student. Plan for your own learning and become an active learner. Set your own goals through identification. of your strengths and areas for development. OK to try things out; safe and secure environment in which to learn about childhood development and the theories that underpin effective working practices with young children.

4 Aims of Personal Development Planning ( PDP)Module to provide students with an opportunity to develop their self- evaluation and reflection including the effect of self on other people and the environment in which the learner works.

5 Through the module you will: Understand the purpose of learning structures and develop independence and responsibility for their own learning; Evaluate and reflect upon their own strengths and weaknesses and update their knowledge and practice through the use of action planning strategies for personal and professional development; Consider what counts as evidence and data in research into education and care; Further develop communication skills using written and oral methods, including the use of ICT.

6 Through the PDP module : You will have the opportunity to address the study skills needed to work within a programme that combines academic challenge and demanding, yet achievable expectations of practical competence.

7 Why do we need study skills? Effective and efficient study skills are fundamental to the successful completion of any course Growing to become more ‘independent as a learner – an active learner – helps you take the initiative and become more adaptable

8 What skills do I need ? Discuss in a small group with those closest to you Share your ideas

9 What study skills do I need ? To be able to plan and organise work systematically; Read and use text effectively; Tackle written assignments confidently; Retrieve information from books, libraries, www; Study effectively on your own; Make good use of tutorial support; Make good use of group work; Interpret and manipulate numerical data.

12 Directed Tasks for Session 2 Read about study skills – look at slides on developing your reading study skills on the Learning Network.

13 Top Seven Tips to help you become a successful student 1.Get into the habit of using the Learning Network – check regularly for course information, session power points etc. 2.Use your University e mail address – log in at least once a week. Course information will be sent to from Jan Ewens via this e-mail address. 3. Keep your diary up to date ! Remember the University has 2 semesters of 15 weeks rather than three terms !

14 Top Seven Tips to help you become a successful student 4. Actively engage with the course – complete directed tasks, take thorough notes in sessions, organise files and complete reading. 5.Keep a note of assignment deadlines and try to meet them! 6.If you need support – please ASK! Sources of support listed in PDP handbook. AND FINALLY ! 7.Look after yourself- try to make time to eat, sleep and exercise!
