4 Key features Code establishes a framework for work with ionising radiation and underpins: STFC Safety Code 14 Management of Radioactive Sealed Sources STFC Safety Code 21 Management of Radioactive Waste STFC Safety Code 28 Management of Radioactive Open Sources (in draft)

5 Key features Code addresses requirements of legislation for example: Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 (IRR99) Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (RSA93) Follows non-nuclear sector best practice for restricting exposure to ionising radiations to levels As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP)

6 Key points Formalises the appointment of: Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs) Louise Nicholson DL ext. 3554 Paul Wright RAL ext. 5480; and Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPSs) Sets out: general arrangements for managing work with ionising radiation – most of which are already in place; and the need to consult with the RPA on radiation matters

7 Key points Also addressed by the code is the: Establishment of personal dosimetry and health surveillance for radiation workers ; Designation of radiation areas; Designation of classified persons; Establishment of general radiation monitoring; Production of prior risk assessments; Production of and adherence to local rules, and Investigation of radiation incidents and the need for contingency plans
