Iraq War Kelsey Carmichael Period 1 English

What is the Iraq War? ▪The Iraq war began on March 19, 2003. ▪The United States dropped cruise missiles and bombs in Baghdad, Iraq. ▪US target was Saddam Hussein, his sons, members in his leadership, and government buildings. ▪US troops captured the Baghdad Airport and began taking control over the capital. ▪Military officials admitted that the Iraqi resistance was stronger then they had expected it to be.

Saddam Hussein Dictator of Iraq from 1979 to 2003. Saddam joined the Baath Party in 1957 and started out by leading school riots. In 1959, he became a member of the assassination squad. He was forced to flee Baghdad and moved to Syria and eventually Egypt. He returned home after the Baath Party overthrew the government, and became vice president of the Baath Party. Saddam became increasingly powerful and brutally ruled Iraq. He ordered his Iraqi troops to take over Kuwait, which the US defended in the Persian Gulf War.

The Bush Administration George W. Bush, US President from 2000 to 2008, was the leader of this organization. Among Bush was Dick Cheney, Vice President; and George H.W. Bush, Executive President George W. Bush had made the decision to bomb Baghdad in 2003, which began the start of the Iraq War. Bush’s motivation to get Saddam Hussein out of power was more motivational and more aggressive than any other president who had mentioned it. He allied himself with others who believed his father had made a mistake not sending troops over to Baghdad earlier. On the day of George W. Bush’s election for President, the national debt was at $5.727 trillion. Treasury Department concludes the national debt amount has now risen to $9.849 trillion.

2008 Election Barack Obama vs. John McCain US did not want a repeat of George W. Bush for President because they feared another drastic change to the economy with all the national debt from war, and all the poor decisions he made with the Bush Administration. Results of the Presidential Election: Barack Obama 365 electoral votes, and John McCain 173 electoral votes. Perhaps Barack Obama won at this time because he was a Democrat. Bush and McCain are both Republicans.

War Statistics Approximately 12,746 American deaths occurred Approximately 33,169 Americans wounded 5,391 Iraqi deaths occured
