2. Steering  Use a comfortable, balanced hand position(9 and 3 o-clock position) to keep safe from the air bags. –Over steer- your vehicle will weave from side to side –Under steer- not turning the vehicle enough to keep in the planned path.

3. Steering (Cont)  Backing Straight –Hold brake –Turn body to the right, and put your right arm over the back of the passenger seat –Put left hand at top of steering wheel(12 o- clock position) –Release pressure off brake –While looking back look through the rear view mirror. –Keep foot over the brake.

4. Steering (cont)  Backing left and right –Before backing check for pedestrians, parked vehicles, and stationary objects around you. –Keep both hands on the wheel for hand over hand steering. –Back slowly as you enter the turn. Make quick glances to the front and sides to be sure no one is near. –Begin to unwind the steering wheel to finish the turn.

5. Signaling  Develop the habit of signaling every time you plan to turn.  Signal well in advance (give others a chance to react).

6. Changing Lanes  Check traffic in the front and left front zones.  Signal and make a blind- spot check over your left shoulder.  Increase your speed slightly as you steer smoothly into the next lane if it is clear  Cancel your signal and adjust your speed

Making turns and Turning the vehicle around  Hand over Hand –Begin the turn from balanced hand position –Start pulling down to the left, your right hand pushes the wheel toward the left about a quarter of a turn –Release your left hand from the wheel and cross it over your right hand to grasp the wheel near the top, continue pulling down.

8. Making turns and Turning the vehicle around (cont)  Push-Pull Steering –Push the steering wheel up with one and down with the other hand. –This method allows you to keep both hands on the wheel at all times.

9. Making a Left turn  Check all traffic  Look for pedestrians and on coming vehicles  Plan turns well in advance  Obey all traffic signs, signals and roadway markers

10. Turning  Procedure for turning –Position vehicle in correct lane for turn –Brake early –Use visual search pattern –Slow to about 10 MPH –For right turn check left again before turning –For left turn, check traffic to the left, then right, then left again –As you begin your turn, make a quick blind spot check through the right side window.

11. Parking  Perpendicular Parking –Position vehicle eight feet from the row of cars –Signal right –Check traffic to rear, and continue braking –Determine personal reference point. –Straighten wheel when centered in the space

12. Parking (cont)  Parallel Parking –Flash brake lights and signal –Shift to reverse –Check traffic –When back of seat is even with the rear bumper of the front vehicle, straighten wheels –When front bumper is even with front vehicle turn wheels sharply –Straighten wheels when in good position

13. Up Hill Parking  No curb –Turn wheels sharply right just before stopping  With Curb –Turn Wheels sharply left

14. Downhill parking  With Curb –Put in park and let you vehicle creep forward while turning the steering sharply right  No Curb –Same Procedure
