5 Reading techniques Skimming and scanning Skimming – getting the rough idea (headline, subtitles, visuals → form an idea about the text) Scanning – looking for specific information: (e.g. key words/key sentences i.e. topic sentences – RB p 77)

13 TAKING NOTES WHILE READING (RB, 75-76) Five-step procedure: SKIM to get the rough idea of the content (title, introductory paragraph, pictures?) SCAN to spot the essential: underline the main points (key words, topic sentences) GIVE HEADINGS (identify main idea of each pg) GROUP PARAGRAPHS (how many parts of the text? headings, subheadings?)
