Effective Evaluations
January 2008 We’re all here today with a common goal – to become polished public speakers Toastmasters gives us guidelines on how to do this through our speaking projects. One of the best ways to understand our strengths and opportunities for improvement is by receiving feedback on your speech and speaking skills. Toastmasters attempts this through the use of evaluations by your fellow toastmasters. For evaluation of your speech to help you, the evaluation needs to focus on the right information and be delivered in an effective way

What are the 3 things that will have greatest impact in making the speaker even better? Active listening Listen as if it is the first time you have heard this speaker Record key points On the list that you’ve already prepared (goals of the manual and personal ones) Write C /R next to them and any key comments At end of speech determine which commendations and recommendations will be most helpful Only focus on these

After the speech Remember timing: 3 minutes
Prepare your evaluation, written and verbal –avoid extensive notes Personal opinion Objective, positive and encouraging Opening Introductions Body C = Issue + Why R = Issue + Why + How Conclusion Summary Mini speech – beginning, middle and end and all your speaking skills Introduction – relevant but short, include a review of the objectives and avoid re-telling the speech CRC – Commend, recommend, Commend Conclusion Always look for recommendations (without them you are implying that the speech is perfect) Timing – not long. You can put additional comments on the evaluation form Remember timing: 3 minutes

Delivering the evaluation
Address the Toastmaster / contest Chair Personal opinion – talk about the impact the speech had on you I felt , I believe, In my opinion, I noticed Establish rapport with the speaker and talk to the audience Be clear and specific about both commendations and recommendations – avoid “that was a great speech” No “but”s Use examples and make suggestions Avoid clichés – well done, great speech, I look forward to hearing your next assignment Talk to the audience, and also speaker – don’t always talk to speaker. Use examples Eg. Instead of saying “You didn’t use gestures” -> “When you were talking about celebrating your win, you could have REALLY expressed your excitement if you’d thrown your hands up in the air!”
