January 8, 2015 WARM UP Title a sheet of lined paper as LEARNING TARGETS. Then, write down the following learning targets. This will be kept in your “Classwork” section of your binder I can support my inferences with evidence from the text. I can participate in discussions about the text.

An inference is a thought process a reader makes to understand the meaning of text, or an image. When you infer, you pay attention to the details in front of you, and you use other information (from your background knowledge) to mentally fill in the gaps between the details that are actually said or shown, and what the author expects the reader to understand. DETAILS IN FRONT OF YOU + BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE = INFERENCE

GALLERY WALK PROTOCOL NO TALKING!! This is thinking time. Really think about what you are seeing. I NOTICE…Write down several details that you observe in the pictures I WONDER…. Write down what you would like to know about the picture.

I notice….I wonder...

DO WE HAVE THE WHOLE STORY? NO! LET’S PUT OUR IDEAS TOGETHER. 1.Read your two sentence strips carefully. Really consider what your strip has to say. 2.Turn and talk to someone. What does your strip say? What do you think your strip is about?

BASED ON THE PICTURES AND SENTENCE STIPS...WHAT CAN YOU INFER HAS HAPPENED? WHAT EVIDENCE DO YOU HAVE TO SUPPORT YOUR INFERENCES?

TICKET OUT THE DOOR On the back of the Note Catcher: 1.What was one inference you made today? 2. What is one question you hope will be answered in the coming weeks?

Guiding Questions You will keep coming back to these questions as you read more. ● WHAT IS HOME? ● HOW DO CRITICAL INCIDENTS REVEAL CHARACTER? ● WHAT COMMON THEMES UNIFY THE REFUGEE EXPERIENCE? ● HOW CAN WE TELL POWERFUL STORIES ABOUT PEOPLE’S EXPERIENCES? 1.Reread your sentences in your group. 2.Can any of the sentences you read in your group connect with these questions? 3.See if you can answer any or all of these questions on the back of your NOTE CATCHER. You have five minutes. Turn and Talk
