What is the “Self”? –Your conscious awareness of possessing a distinct identity that separates you and your environment from others in your society

THEORY THROUGH CLAY 1.TAKE THE PIECE OF CLAY AND CREATE A PERSON. 2.AFTER YOU HAVE CREATED YOUR PERSON WRITE A BRIEF BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF YOUR PERSON…THEIR NAME, LIKES/DISLIKES, PERSONALITY TRAITS 3.HOW WILL YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR PERSON HAS THOSE TRAITS?

3 THEORIES OF SOCIALIZATION 1. LOCKE: TABULA RASA –TABULA RASA MEANS “BLANK SLATE” –Each of us is born without a personality –CHILDREN ARE ENTIRELY MOLDED BY THEIR ENVIRONMENT –PEOPLE ACQUIRE PERSONALITY AS A RESULT OF SOCIAL EXPERIENCE

COOLEY: LOOKING-GLASS SELF –REFERS TO THE INTERACTIVE PROCESS BY WHICH WE DEVELOP AN IMAGE OF OURSELF BASED ON HOW WE IMAGINE WE APPEAR TO OTHERS –OTHER PEOPLE ARE THE “MIRROR” –3 steps Imagine how we appear to others Based on their reactions, is their view the same as ours? we use the perception of how others see us to develop feelings about ourselves

IN 1st GRADE WHAT DID YOU THINK YOU WERE GOING TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? IN 5 TH GRADE WHAT DID YOU THINK YOU WERE GOING TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? CURRENTLY, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WILL DO ONCE YOU ARE OUT OF SCHOOL? WHAT FACTORS HAVE INFLUENCED OF CHANGED THESE THOUGHTS?

MEAD: ROLE-TAKING –By anticipating what others expect of us, we can learn to see ourselves through the eyes of others –3 Steps –Imitation –Play –Games –Through role-taking we develop a sense of self –SIGNIFICANT OTHERS = PEOPLE CLOSEST TO US –GENERALIZED OTHER = INTERNALIZED EXPECTATIONS OF SOCIETY –“I” = unsocialized, spontaneous, self- interested –“Me” = aware of expectations and attitudes of society
