Submission doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/0627r0 May 2012 Ron Murias, InterDigital CommunicationsSlide 2 Abstract This document proposes a preamble for the 1 MHz mode which supports Single-User Beamforming (SU-BF).

Submission doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/0627r0 Background Slide 3Ron Murias, InterDigital Communications May 2012 Document 12/371r0 proposed adoption of the following transmit beamforming sections from IEEE P802.11ac™/D2.0: 8.4.1.46 VHT MIMO Control field 8.4.1.47 VHT Compressed Beamforming Report field - contents of feedback frame 8.4.1.48 MU Exclusive Beamforming Report field - contents of MU frame 9.31.5 VHT sounding protocol 22.3.11 and its subsections: SU-MIMO and MU-MIMO Beamforming However, the 1 MHz mode has a different preamble and it is not clear how transmit beamforming will be supported.

Submission doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/0627r0 Beamforming for 1 MHz Slide 4Ron Murias, InterDigital Communications May 2012 The 1 MHz mode will likely be used for low-cost sensor applications, where the STAs may have only one or two antennae. Beamforming to low-cost sensor STAs is good method for increasing the rate/range as most of the complexity is at the AP. The 1 MHz mode should include a minimal overhead preamble format which supports SU-BF.

Submission doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/0627r0 Proposed Single User Preamble Format Slide 5Ron Murias, InterDigital Communications May 2012 Similar to the 802.11n GF preamble. Supports beamforming for 1 MHZ Single-User case without added overhead of a SIG-B symbol. Supports Beamforming without creating hidden nodes.

Submission doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/0627r0 Conclusion/Recommendations The current specification framework does not have a preamble mode for 1 MHz that supports SU-BF. Adopting a preamble format that supports SU-BF would be very beneficial for 1 MHz systems. Slide 6Ron Murias, InterDigital Communications May 2012

Submission doc.: IEEE 802.11-12/0627r0 Straw Poll Do you think that a 1 MHz preamble mode that supports SU-BF should be specified? Yes No Abstain Slide 7Ron Murias, InterDigital Communications May 2012
