A Global Virtual School For Sustainable Development The City Of Joensuu, Finland

ENO-Environment Online is a global virtual school for sustainable development and environmental awareness. Four environmental themes are studied within a school year on a weekly basis. About 200 schools from 75 countries currently take part. ENO is administrated by the city of Joensuu, Finland.

OBJECTIVES to add environmental awareness and sustainable development into learning to increase global awareness and internationality to learn skills in ICT to get schools from developing countries as active participants

SOME KEY POINTS Act locally - think globally! Information is gathered from local communities and shared globally on the ENO website Learning is student-centred with both online and offline activities. At the end of each theme there is a campaign week during which the results of learning are raised at local level and on the website.

ENO and National Curriculum Cross-curricular entities: International education and cultural identity, sustainable development, communication and media skills Objectives of each ENO themes are similar to ones in these three integrities

PARTICIPANTS 300 ENO Schools in 90 countries About 6000 students and 700 teachers The age of students: 11 - 18 years ”Open doors” days: ENO Tree Planting Day, 21st of September (the opening day for the new schoolyear).

STUDYING ENO curricula on the web (themes, contents,goals, schedule and weekly tasks ) A special campaign week in the end of each theme when results are shared with communities ( school, village, web community) Assessment: ENO Learning Diary Chat lessons about the topics Themes are decided by teachers
