Lesson 6.1 AIM: Understanding Multiplication of Exponents
2
Zero Exponents Anything to the power of 0 equals 1.
3
Negative Exponents If you want to get rid of a negative exponent, move it to the top or bottom of the fraction.
4
Multiplying Exponents If you are multiplying bases with exponents, ADD THE EXPONENTS. 3 5 x 3 4 = 3 9 h 2 x h 9 = h 11
5
(3d -4 )(5d 8 ) Multiply the Coefficients (3x5) Add the Exponents (-4+8) (3d -4 )(5d 8 ) = 15d 4
6
p 7 q 5 p 6 Add the exponents for the same bases. p 7 q 5 p 6 = p 13 q 5
7
Add the exponents. Make the exponent positive.
8
5 -6 5 4 Add the exponents. 5 -6 5 4 = 5 -2 Make the exponent positive. 5 -2 =
9
(7 x 10 7 )(5 x 10 -5 ) Multiply the Coefficients Then add the Exponents (7 x 10 7 )(5 x 10 -5 ) = 35 x 10 2
10
(7.2 x 10 -7 )(2 x 10 -5 ) Multiply the Coefficients Then add the Exponents (7.2 x 10 -7 )(2 x 10 -5 ) = 14.4 x 10 -12
11
(2.1 x 10 -4 )(4 x 10 -7 ) Multiply the Coefficients Then add the Exponents (2.1 x 10 -4 )(4 x 10 -7 ) = 8.4 x 10 -11
12
(7 x 10 6 )(4 x 10 9 ) Multiply the Coefficients Then add the Exponents (7 x 10 6 )(4 x 10 9 ) = 28 x 10 15
