Definitions of the Day (DODs) 8.6 – Multiplication Property of Exponents Power (Review) Base (Review) Exponent (Review)
2
Review – Power – Any expression in the form a n. Ex. 5 4, read as “5 to the 4 th power.” bxbx b is the base x is the exponent
3
What is another way to write 4 2 ? What is another way to write 4 3 ? Combine the 4’s together. How many 4’s do you have? Rewrite the string of 4’s by using exponents. What might be a general rule for this process?

Multiplying Powers with the Same Base If and n and m are integers, a m a n = a m+n Ex. 3 5 3 4 = 3 5+4 = 3 9 x 3 x 7 = x 3+7 = x 10 Notice! The bases must be the same! We can not simplify an expression like 2 3 5 2. The bases are not the same!
5
Multiplying Numbers in Scientific Notation The rule for Multiplying Powers with the Same Base can help us when Multiplying Numbers in Scientific Notation. If a and b are real numbers and n and m are integers, then: Ex. Notice! Multiply the numbers together, and add the exponents together!

Simplify each expression
