1 W ARM UP 12/05/14 Question: Where are the most reactive elements on the periodic table? Answer: in groups 1 & 17 (because of their almost complete valence shells). Goal: I will learn how to name covalent compounds.

2 Q UICK R ECAP Valence Electrons Outermost, involved in bonding, octet Each group shares the same # and hence similar chemical properties Oxidation number Charge after getting octet. Elements in same group have same oxidation #. Ionic Bonding Metals lose electrons (+ ions), non-metals gain electrons (- ions): opposites attract. Metal gets pronounced normal, non-metal gets “-ide” ending. Covalent Bonding Two or more non-metals can share electrons Naming involves prefixes to indicate how many of each atom.

3 ELEMENT OF THE DAY 40 – Zirconium – Zr Tubes made of high-purity zirconium are used to contain the fuel pellets of nuclear reactors. Zirconium oxide is used as an abrasive in grinding wheels and sandpaper. Zirconium dioxide is known as cubic zirconia, which is what fake diamonds are made of.

4 A GENDA - Bellwork - Food / trash / sink reminder - Review HW - Notes – naming covalent - Practice/HW - Homework -Per 1,2,8: pg 17, 23-24 -Per 4, 6: 23 -Ch 16 quiz Tues
