2 What entices you to purchase a shirt? Is it the color or the logo or the design? Aesthetic is a word used to describe a pleasing appearance. Some things may be pleasing to you, but not to your parents or friends. Designers must consider aesthetics in the work that they do. Six design elements serve both aesthetic and functional purposes when a product is invented or innovated. Line, shape and form, color, light and shadow, space, and texture are the design elements that make an object pleasing to our eyes.

4 Line Can be straight, curved, horizontal, vertical, or diagonal Produces a sense of movement Curved Graceful flow HorizontalIncreases length VerticalIncreases height DiagonalShows a transition Can be thick, thin or broken

5 Shapes and Forms The shape is the 2-dimensional outline of an object; forms are 3-dimensional versions of the shape. Some examples of specific shapes and forms are: Squares Rectangles Circles Triangles Ovals

6 Color Provides definition, interest, variety, and attracts attention Each color may evoke a sense of different feelings, such as Red Warm Yellow Attention Green Lessen tension Blue Cool or formal Violet Mystery

7 Light and Shadow By using various combinations of light & shadow, you can create a sense of depth.

8 Space By incorporating the use of space in your design, you can enlarge or reduce the visual space. Empty Space Lots of Space Out of Space

9 Texture The use of various patterns combined with appropriate colors can visually simulate various materials.
