By the end of class you should be able to identify the quantity and type of sub-atomic particle, illustrate, and list the state at room temperature of any element on the periodic table using the information provided in the element box. Please take Cornell Notes during the presentation!

What is an ELEMENT?

A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.

Aluminum is an example of an ELEMENT.

Reading an element box… ALWAYS the # of protons (+) USUALLY the # of electrons (-) too (unless it’s an ION = charged particle) (aka… Chemical symbol) *ALWAYS capitalize the 1 st letter and lower case the rest *capital letter = new element (aka… Atomic mass) Atomic mass = protons + neutrons

Let’s identify P.E.N… P= # of protons (+), E= of electrons (-), and N= # of neutrons (atomic mass – atomic #) P = 54 + E = 54 - N = 127

Structure of an atomic diagram

Sub-atomic particles… Notice that most of the mass of an atom is from the proton and neutron! Electrons are super tiny and have a very small mass by comparison.

Identify PEN, then construct an atomic diagram… P = 7 + E = 7 - N = 7 NUCLEUS

Don’t forget to summarize your Cornell notes & create the questions!
