1 Masters of Arts in Education, Concentration in Special Education Department of Special Education San Jose State University

2 MA Program  The MA in Education with a Concentration in Special Education is a rigorous program designed to give an opportunity to candidates with experience in the field to ask questions about practices, policies, educational strategies or attitudes that can be answered by conducting a research project. The candidates utilize their experiences and knowledge from courses to design a research study that investigates an issue.

3 MA Program: Requirements MA Writing Assessment : dates are on web site: www.sjsu.edu/specialed: Programs > MA Program www.sjsu.edu/specialed 30 units total for the MA :  18 units (6 courses) of “electives” (coursework from the credential programs and must include one of the courses about Autism Spectrum Disorders)  12 units (4 courses) that provide instruction in designing a research project, getting university approval to conduct research (IRB Proposal), writing a literature review to identify any related studies that support the study and summarizing research results

4 Requirements (continued)  MA Application with two letters of recommendation (if in the credential program) or three letters of recommendation if not in the credential program  Statistics Class  GPA of 3.0 to apply; Maintain a 3.0 GPA (SJSU policy), and earn a B or an A in every course (Department policy)while in the program  Certificate of Clearance

5 MA Courses (designing and completing a study)  EDSE 285: Seminar on Issues Related to Teaching Exceptional Individuals- Fall semester.  EDSE 231: Issues and Research in Special Education- Spring semester (semester following EDSE 285).  EDSE 231X: Educational Research: Design and Implementation- Fall semester (semester following EDSE 231)  EDSE 220: Research Seminar- Spring semester (semester following EDSE 231X).
