1 The Great Introduction… What makes an good introduction? It grabs or “hooks” the reader’s attention by using one or more of the following strategies: – A quotation – An interesting fact or statistic – A strong statement’ – Outrageous statement It tells how the writing will be organized. The author’s position is clearly stated in a thesis statement.

2 You Could Begin with a Strong Statement : Example: From child prodigy, to multi-instrumental genius, to living legend, Stevie Wonder is one of the greatest artists of all time.

3 You Could Open with a Quotation: Example: Stevie Wonder once said, “Ability may get you to the top, but character is what keeps you there.”

4 You Could Open with a interesting fact: Example: Mere blindness wasn’t about to stop Stevie Wonder from pursuing his love of music. A member of his local church choir soon after he could walk, the young singer mastered piano, harmonica, drums and bass before hitting his teens.

5 You Could Open with a Fact or Statistic : Example: It's no surprise music legend Stevie Wonder holds the title of the most Grammys awarded to a solo male artist.

6 Open with an Outrageous Statement: Example: Stevie Wonder is the most accomplished artists of all time.

7 Writing the Thesis Statement Put your completed thesis statement at the end of your first paragraph. COMPLETED THESIS STATEMENT Stevie Wonder, even with this disability, made his landmark to be a pioneer and innovator in the music industry.
