Introduction The sport of climbing has been becoming increasing popular over the past few years. There is a large gap in the amount and quality of coaching and feedback provided for the recreational climber when compared with professionals. The ClimbAX system was created in order to try to fill this gap.

Two wrist-worn watch-like devices equipped with tri-axial accelerometers. Each wristband contains a NAND memory chip, a microprocessor, and an LED. Wristbands are adjustable to fit all wrist sizes and are made out of a comfortable silicone that is scratch resistant, water-proof, and rugged. Technology Overview of ClimbAX Technology

Data is processed from the bands using an analysis procedure that automatically: Filters climbing from background activities Identifies individual climbs Segments climbs into individual moves (i.e. transitions) Performs a climbing skill assessment based on an objective scoring scheme In the below table, actual climbing only makes up 17% of the data in the “Sport Climbing” data set. Analysis of 4 Key Skills Core Climbing Skills PowerControlStabilitySpeed 4 Key Skills (determined by professional coaches) that are analyzed: Power- the ability to transfer isometric strength into a move. Control- the ability to transition smoothly between holds. Stability- the ability to remain composed while holding onto holds. Speed- a timing observation (completion in shortest time is generally best).

Allows climbers to track a set of physical performance skills. This could allow for self- directed training and more intelligent, scientific training protocols.
