2 Index -The role of the family in Community Based Rehabilitation (C.B.R) -Lesson learned in 20 years of experiences in C.B.R programs in Egypt

3 The case of disability in Egypt The Egyptian population is 80 million N° of disable person in Egypt is 8 million Only 3-4% of the disable has access to services. N° of SETI – Caritas Egypt – C.B.R programs is 37 in 7 governorates.

4 Since 1989 we apply C.B.R programs in 37 different locations in 7 governorates. We withdraw from 25 locations of them. The strategy of the department aiming to implement 14 programs in East Delta of Egypt (2008- 2013) The case of disability in Egypt

13 - Power of facing and fighting problem and challenges What families have? - Strong motivation to call for advocacy - Many questions like: Why community has a negative attitude toward disability? Why our children have no enough services and un-equality with other children? The potential to change their life and to do the best for the disable children

14 What families can do? Advocate Lead Solve big problems with creative solutions Making the world hear the voice of their children After empowerment, they could be a specialist advisors and trainers. Assessing the needs of their children Backing the services and supporting other families

15 What do families need to be empowered?. Learning how to bring positive thinking Learning how to gain confidence Learning how to build a referral system Training them to have all basic skills needed for rehabilitation process (assessment – design programs – networking – advocacy)

16 If the family can be empowered by the C.B.R workers – this could: Ensuring the sustainability of the program Developing the abilities if the child at home Increasing the family participation in the C.B.R project The family could help in job finding and job placement within the community
