9/17/14 Evaluating Expressions Textbook: 3-5 V & E p.124 DO NOW 1). What is a variable (notes! notes!)? Translate: 2). 8y 3). 2x + 6 4). 5 ÷ x 5). Three times a number plus four 6). A number divided by two, minus three

Announcements 1). Penn has fallen behind Penn State in Homework Completion in the Cohort Competition 2). Mr. Nauen will fulfill Supergirl’s challenge prize if we finish over 70% skill mastery on Friday’s quiz 3). Sign up for clinic Mon-Thur on the board AP

What are we doing Today OBJECTIVE: WE WILL be able to translate and evaluate variables ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDINGS: To evaluate a variable expression, simplify the expression and replace the variable with a known value! AP

Vocabulary Class Discussion: What does it mean to evaluate something? What does the word “substitute” mean? What does the word “combine” mean? AP

Rules: Evaluating Variable Expressions 1). To evaluate a variable expression, simplify it & substitute a value for the variable 2). Perform all indicated operations, following PEMDAS rules. Mr. Nauen always also translates the expressions! It helps to understand them! AP

Substitution: Watch me do this (learn & take notes!) Translate – Draw Arrows - Rewrite If A = 2, B = 4, C = -3 1). 2A 2). B + 33). 4C 5). (A/2) + 66). (A + B + C) x 2 AP

Math Gods of CR South Try! Translate & Evaluate the following expressions if D = 4 and F = 6 1). D – 22). 2F3). D + F 4) 2D – F5). F/2 + 3D AP

Simplifying: Combining Terms Sometimes we have to combine terms with expressions: 6 + 3 – 2 = 6x + 3x – 2x = 5 + - 3 + - 2 = 5x + -3x + - 2 = AP

Strategy for Combining Terms The commutative property of addition states that the order of adding does not change the sum 5 + -3 + 10 + -4 + 8 + -2 = 5 + 10 + 8 + -3 + -4 + -2 AP

Let’s Try Together 1). 4x + 6x – 3x = (x = 2) 2). 5 + 2Y + 3y + -4 (Y = 3) 3). 3b + - 1b + 6b + - 5b + 2b (b=4) 4). 2a + -4 + -3 + a + 2a (a = 10) AP
