4. Fast Facts Antarctica is 5.4 million square miles. It is bigger than Australia or Europe! Antarctica has 0 population. The highest point is called Vinson Massif it is 16,864 feet above sea level. Antarctica means opposite to the Arctic.

5. ANTARCTIC ANIMALS The emperor penguins are Antarctica’s largest bird. They can be up to 4 feet tall. Emperors do not build nests. Elephant seals can be as long as 21 feet and can inflate their snout like a balloon.

6. Geography The largest glacier is called Beardmore Glacier and it is the size of France! Some places in Antarctica have valleys and the high winds keep snow from collecting in the valleys.

7. People and culture No one lives in Antarctica but scientists go there every summer to research. Scientists go there to study the land, the air, the weather, the wildlife, the water and the ice.

8. Antarctica Roald Amundson was the first person to reach Antarctica on December 4 th 1911. Even better he and his crew made it home safely.
