Linear Momentum 7.1
2
Momentum Linear momentum p = mv Moves along a straight line
3
Momentum and Newton’s Second Law F = ma F = (m·Δv)/Δt F = Δp/Δt A net force exerted on an object equals the rate of change of the object’s linear momentum.
4
Impulse Impulse is the product of force and the time interval over which the force acts. Impulse = F·Δt Impulse = momentum change Same as momentum units (kg·m/s) but we use N·s to distinguish the two. Follow-through in baseball, tennis, golf, etc.
5
Newton’s Third Law of Motion Forces come in pairs—action and reaction
6
Conservation of Linear Momentum Closed system—does not lose or gain mass Isolated system—a closed system on which no net external forces act When no net external forces act on a closed system, the total linear momentum of the system remains constant.
