By Lora B. Taylor 2012

Law of Inertia 1 st Law 1 st Law – An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion at constant velocity, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

What does this mean? It is the natural tendency of objects to keep on doing what they're doing. For example, this golf ball will sit on the tee until some force makes it move.

Newton’s Second Law Force equals mass times acceleration. (F=MA)

What does this mean? Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The greater the mass (of the object being accelerated) the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the object).

1,000 x.05 = 50 Newtons Mass =1,000 kg Acceleration =.05 m/s/s

Newton’s Third Law For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

What does this mean? For every interaction, there is a pair of forces. The size of the forces on the first object equals the size of the force on the second object. The direction of the force on the first object is opposite to the direction of the force on the second object.

Air pushes down on the bird’s wing and the wing pushes back with an equal amount of force. This creates lift and the bird flies!

Review of Newton’s Laws Tell which of Newton’s Laws applies. 1. A person who is not wearing a seatbelt is thrown through the window when the car slams on its brakes. Answer: Newton’s 1 st Law

2. A rocket is launched into space. Answer: Newton’s 3 rd Law

3. Pushing a child in a swing is easier than pushing an adult. Answer: Newton’s 2 nd Law
