3 U.S. Census Bureau 2000 AESDirect – Efficient Use Create New Shipment: enter USPPI and consignee codes on first screen Use Shipment Retrieval to create new shipments whenever possible To retrieve a shipment – just enter shipment # Freight Forwarder Info: most shipments do not need it entered Don’t enter what AESDirect does not need, e.g. equipment details

4 U.S. Census Bureau 2000 AESDirect – Efficient Use Navigate from shipment section to section – only go back to View SED to submit shipment Look-Ups: to initiate use “?AA.. ” instead of “? ” Look-Ups: avoid null search – creates long list/takes time Look-Ups: cannot find Port of Unlading – enter country name to obtain a list of all ports in that country

5 U.S. Census Bureau 2000 AESDirect – Good Practices New users should take the tutorial & quiz before providing access to filing account. Give them the tutorial username Consignee Codes: use your own or let AESDirect create them – don’t mix Consignee Codes: pre-enter frequently occurring ones

6 U.S. Census Bureau 2000 AESDirect – Good Practices Use a meaningful (for your company) shipment number Make use of specific help links: (SCAC, Commodity Code) To delete a section use the “Clear Section” button

7 U.S. Census Bureau 2000 AESDirect – Useful Things to Know/Do Understand the new USPPI regulations Use XTN# on exemption statement not ITN# Once AESDirect accepts your shipment – move it Be aware of AESDirect response, look-up, and help window minimization Use multiple browser sessions: USPPI set-up, shipment reporting, create/retrieve

8 U.S. Census Bureau 2000 AESDirect – Useful Things to Know/Do If you take a break: minimize, don’t close your browser, also lock it or use a screen saver Use AESDirect to e-mail a submission response to your logistics chain partners Tailor shipment reporting pre-set reports to suit your company’s business Various reports provide different sorts of your data - exporter, consignee, carrier Not sure of transportation details: estimate and then amend

9 U.S. Census Bureau 2000 AESDirect – Useful Things to Know/Do Canadian trans-shipments: border crossing point defines MOT, export date, and carrier Shipments to Mexico: requires Mexican state code Problem with a SCAC Code: enter UNKN – but let us know the problem Do not enter in-transit shipments – use paper process Use the on-line help

10 U.S. Census Bureau 2000 AESDirect – Useful Things to Know/Do Remember for value, quantity, gross weight: no decimal points or decimal digits Problem with HTS code: check non-valid for export HTS list Remember: if a Qty is KG then gross weight must be greater than or equal to this Qty Remember commodity code: Must be 10 digits, no “.” or “-”
