2 Weight Gain First Trimester—minimal weight gain, but women do experience swelling of the breasts and abdomen Second Trimester—women gain weight and the pregnancy becomes apparent

3 Weight Gain Normal weight gain  25-35 pounds –6-8 lbs for baby –14-24 lbs for placenta, fluids, and other maternal weight gain

4 Maternity Clothes By the 4 th month, women notice that their clothing becomes uncomfortably tight around the chest and waist Maternity clothes are specially designed to fit pregnant women Maternity pants have a stretchy panel in the front to accommodate a growing midsection

5 Maternity Clothes Pregnant women need low-heeled shoes with good support Pregnant women often need shoes that are longer and wider than their normal size. –Why do you think this is?

6 Discomforts of Pregnancy Many discomforts are caused by hormonal changes Other discomforts result from the increasing size of the uterus

7 Common Discomforts Need to urinate frequently  expanding uterus puts pressure on the bladder Shortness of breath  top of uterus is pushing against woman’s diaphragm Nausea  aka Morning Sickness, but can occur at any time, most common in first trimester Backache  weight pulls spine forward Constipation  hormones slow digestive tract Leg Cramps  caused by poor circulation Heartburn  hormonal changes, pressure on the stomach Swollen ankles and feet  body fluids increase

8 Emotional Changes Mood swings are common during pregnancy –A pregnant woman might be cheerful one minute and tearful or irritable the next –Some mood swings are caused by hormones

9 Managing Stress Stress—physical and mental tension that people experience as a result of changes and events in their lives Stress-reducing strategies: –Getting plenty of sleep each night –Taking breaks to rest & relax throughout the day –Exercising regularly –Enjoying the company of family and friends –Making time for fun activities

10 Expectant Father’s Emotions A father-to-be may feel left out because so much attention is directed at the pregnant woman He may be worried about the baby’s and mother’s health Some men experience sympathy symptoms –Nausea, appetite changes, weight gain, fatigue, and mood swings
