He was the youngest of five.
February 1939, he went to UCLA. He played football, basketball, baseball and track.
1940, Jackie signed with a semiprofessional football team, Honolulu Bears.
He was drafted into the Army.

Jackie graduated from Officer candidate school as a second lieutenant.
Jackie became engaged to Rachel Isum.
He was honorably discharged from the Army.
Jackie tried out for the Kansas City Monarchs baseball team. He made the team as a shortstop.
