Professional Learning Cycle Orozco Academy What is it? How does it fit in with my instructional practices?

Where does the Professional Learning Cycle come from?

Pillar 1 First: we need high standards, rigorous curriculum and powerful instruction for all students regardless of their neighborhood, diverse learning needs or level of English language proficiency. We must go beyond the basics to ensure that children become critical thinkers, effective communicators and responsible global citizens. The definition of core instruction must be expanded to include the arts, health, physical education and extracurricular activities.

CIWP The Continuous Improvement Work Plan (CIWP) is the two-year school improvement plan required of all CPS schools. The purpose of the CIWP is to establish each school’s mission, its strategic priorities, and the steps the school will take to accomplish its goals. The CIWP replaces the SIPAAA with a streamlined strategic planning process using goal and priority setting work schools have already completed.

TOA 0 A theory of action is at its core, a simple IF, THEN statement. 0 Example: IF we have professional learning communities, THEN student learning will improve. IF we adopt a new literacy program, THEN our students will be stronger readers and writers. 0 Benefits: It establishes a clear path toward the goal of impacting student learning. It becomes a set of checkpoints to make sure the expected outcomes at each step along the way are realized and suggests important interventions if they are not.

Summary The Professional Learning Cycle is created by members of the ILT, based on the most current ISAT/NWEA data results. The cycle includes what our year-long and quarterly focus will be. It also incorporates a system of input and feedback. The progress of the implementation of the Professional Learning Cycle is monitored by the ILT through learning walks and data (Dashboard, NWEA, and ISAT). This correlates directly to Pillar 1: high standards, rigorous curriculum and powerful instruction.
