5 Why does Sheila want to stay to hear Gerald’s story? Guilt Shame Feels responsible ‘She feels responsible. And if she leaves now, and doesn’t hear anymore, then she’ll feel entirely to blame, she’ll be alone with her responsibility, the rest of tonight, all tomorrow, all the next night…. [sternly to them] You see, we have to share something. If there’s nothing else, we’ll have to share our guilt.’ What does the inspector mean? How does it represent Priestley’s ideas?

6 RelationshipEvidence Happy and in loveJust got engaged Relationships – Sheila and Gerald Both Gerald and Sheila are shocked by each other’s revelations. Use this table to examine how Sheila and Gerald’s relationship has changed since the beginning of the play.

7 Gerald and Sheila Why does Sheila return the engagement ring? What does it suggest about Sheila? How has she changed? What has she understood about her behaviour? How does this tie in with Priestley’s themes and ideas?

8 Homework - choose one of the following- write 1 page at least. Gerald writes a letter of apology to Sheila to persuade her to take him back. What would he say? How would he win her back? Sheila telephones a close friend to tell her that her engagement to Gerald is over. What would she say? How does she feel about Gerald now and what he did? This piece of homework will be marked for its written content and literacy skills.

How does she feel about her part in Eva’s death? Should she have forgiven Gerald? Should she have ended the relationship? Can you marry a man who has lied to you?
