What are they..? A type of Rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus Sumatrensis) Also considered the ‘hairy rhino’ (tough hair/fur) Only about 200 Rhinos left in world. Live around southeast asia, in protected areas. Also named the Asain two horned Rhino Small compared to other Rhinos Can’t sweat, uses mud to cool off

Where do they live? Live in Rainforests, swamps & Cloud forests Prefer close to water and valleys Near eastern Asia, Burma and Bangladesh Also in Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia Scattered in groups in different places Live on island of Sumtra, split into two by mountains

How / why are they being killed? Being killed because of Poaching purposes Sumatran Horn worth $30,000 per horn Other body parts used also Meat is Medicine, rhino head oil medicine also Hunted by Spear and pit traps Horn considered ‘protection’ from poison Third of population kept safe in national parks

What do they eat? Usually eat just before nightfall or in morning Eat leaves, saplings twigs and shoots Eat up to 50kg (110lb) of food every day Can eat up to 100 different kinds of foods Large proportion of food tree sapling (Leaves) Frequently changing diets Diet high in Fiber, moderate in protein

What makes the Sumatran Rhinoceros Unique? One of the worlds rarest animal Smallest Rhinoceros species Calf leaves mother at 18 months Horn believed to cure illness’s Have Very poor Vision Most vocal Rhino, also commumicates with feet Closely related to Woolly Rhinceros

Some general facts of Sumatran Rhinceros Gray-ish leather hair (shaped like armour plates 2 horns, front horn larger then rear Tiger one of main predators Can swim well in Oceans Horn of rhino perched on skull (not rooted in) In day, Rhino wallows in mud, at night hunts Usually live in hilly areas with swamps
