Ebola By Marco Broccoli

What is it? Ebola is an infectious disease that affects humans and monkeys. It is classified as a filovirus which is a one stranded RNA virus.

Background Dr. Ngoy Mushola was the first person to discover the virus. He discovered Ebola in 1976.It is a level 4 virus which means there is no vaccine. Ebola mostly targets non-human primates and has killed 25% of earths gorillas.

Types There are four know types Ebola-Zaire, Ebola- Sudan, Ebola-Ivory Coast, and Ebola-Reston-the only strand that occurred outside of Africa.

Symptoms Fever Sore throat Weakness Severe headache Joint and muscle pain Diarrhea Vomiting

Symptoms (cont.) Dehydration Dry, hacking cough Stomach pain

Info Video

Routes of Infection Contact with infected bodily fluids and/or tissues Inhaling or ingesting contaminated material Injected with contaminated material

Quarantine Only authorized personnel No outside contact Medical Officers

Curing Ebola So far, the best way to fight against a virus is a vaccine. The way a vaccine works is that the doctor or nurse injects a small part of the virus into the patient but just enough to trigger the antibodies. They cant do that with Ebola because they believe it is to deadly to have injected into someone.

Experiments in Vaccines 1. Monkeys 2. Pigs 3. Guinea pigs 4. 1 illegal human trial

The Clean-up 1. Wear hazmat suits for protection 2. Destroy the source 3. Clean the area 4. Spend three months on quarantine or demolish the building

Through the Microscope

Where is the Natural Reservoir? A natural reservoir is were the virus exists in nature. Scientist think it is some were in North-West Africa

How to Avoid it Wash your hands Stay away from infected individual No contact with infected bodily fluids or tissue Be careful when you eat monkey

The Aftermath You might think when the epidemic is over, its over. WRONG! There is the aftermath. This is were you have all the bodies together. This is were the second wave could happen. If you do not dispose of the bodies correctly that’s the result.
