TACOM Project Objectives for Coatings Application u Spray straight out of the can low VOC coating using CO 2 spray system. u 2.2 lbs/gal VOC coating will be demonstrated long term using CO 2. u Transfer technology to DoD sites. u Select and demonstrate complete coating system using CO 2. u Formulate CARC of commercial value with 1.0 lb/gal VOC - goal.
3
P2 and More u Environmental regulations are becoming more stringent. u Price of non-Compliance is very high. u Current coatings generate considerable emissions. u Readiness. u Waterborne and powder coatings may be considerably more expensive.
4
Program to Date u Two or three sites preparing to start up long term demonstration / validation of the low VOC coating application using CO 2. u Reformulated 2.8 lbs/gal VOC CARC paint sprayed through CO 2 spray system on Army trailers. u 2.2 lbs/gal VOC passed chemical agent resistance. u Continue partnering with DoD low VOC Coatings Application Work Group.
5
Conclusions 1. CARC with 2.8 lbs/gal VOC sprayed successfully using UNICARB system. 2. Reduction in emissions measured during RIA demonstration at 78%. 3. Fewer passes needed to paint to desired coating thickness. 4. About 60% less paint used during RIA demonstration. 5. Importance of team work.
