8 What can we do? Task 1.Study the following pictures 2.What do you think we mean by hard and soft engineering? 3.What is the difference? Extension; Choose one method and explain how it will prevent flooding Soft Hard Hard engineering is very visible methods which have been made by man. These include flood barriers, dams etc. Soft engineering is where the method is natural. This may be allowing the river to flood in certain area, planting trees and building up the banks of the river

9 Protecting the river; Task Each table has got a series of different flood protection methods 1.Make notes on the protection method in front of you 2.Sort the different methods into Hard and Soft methods 3.As a table, you need to teach 2 soft methods and 2 hard methods Key defences; 1.Embankment 2.Channeling 3.Flood relief channels 4.Flood plain 5.Land use zones 6.Afforestation 7.Flood warning system Extension; Which method do you think is the best? Explain
